Zhao Guorong: credentials and career
Zhao Guorong, born in Harbin, Heilongjiang in 1961, is a xiangqi grandmaster. He won the national individual title in 1990, 1992, 1995 and 2008, the second World Xiangqi Championship in 1991 and the Asian individual title in 1989. Eighteen years separate his first and fourth national crowns.
Zhao received early guidance from Wang Jialiang. The “New Northeast Tiger” nickname reflects that Heilongjiang connection. Public profiles describe both attacking strength and precision; three wins, a draw and a loss let readers examine those descriptions against actual games.
Six images show individual play, the champion team, public events, awards and an interview.

From Harbin junior to four-time champion
The timeline below verifies the dated milestones first, then explains how they connect into a career path.
Born in Harbin, Heilongjiang
Birth-month accounts differ; this profile uses only the consistent year and place.
Public profiles connect Zhao’s development with Wang Jialiang while emphasising his precision. Shared training history does not make two players’ plans identical; the differences must be studied on the board.
The 1990 national title and 1991 world title belong to different competitions. The WXF table also preserves the 1993 silver, avoiding a single undifferentiated claim of international success.
National crowns span 1990–2008. The 2013 league and 2018 team championship add another perspective, requiring a distinction between individual play, coaching and the work of a whole side.
Champion in 1990, 1992, 1995 and 2008; defeated Hong Zhi for the fourth title.
World Xiangqi Championship1991 individual champion
The WXF table lists Zhao as the second edition’s men’s champion and the 1993 runner-up.
Asian Individual Championship1989 champion
The Asian federation table records victory in the fourth men’s event in Manila.

Individual results and team contributions
Beyond the four individual crowns, Heilongjiang’s 2013 league and 2018 national team titles show another role: consistent play and cooperation across different formats.
